Introduction: Okay, I'll Start with the Bad News...

Introduction to Stage Fright

You will never get rid of your stage fright. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

The good news? While we can’t eliminate stage fright completely from our brains, we can learn to manage it and redirect it to make our performances better than ever.

Want some more good news? You’re not alone. In fact, every single person on the planet experiences performance anxiety multiple times throughout their lives. And if someone tells you they’ve never been nervous before a performance, they are flat-out lying to you. This is how science proves it:

Imagine waking up one morning surrounded by a dozen hungry lions. (Just go with it.) Your brain immediately signals: Danger! Your body sends an immediate burst of adrenaline coursing through your veins, your heart races, and every sense is on high alert. These are our animal instincts and they are hard-wired into our genetic code. It’s our biology’s way of saying, “Do something. Now.”

Performance anxiety triggers the exact same fight-or-flight response. Our brains perceive facing an audience as something dangerous—no different than if you were face-to-face with real predators. Suddenly, you’re sweating, your stomach’s in knots, and you feel like running for the nearest exit. But guess what? You’re not in danger. No one in the audience is going to chase you down to eat you. I promise.

The best news? This instinctive surge of energy is actually a powerful performance tool. It means your body is awake, alive, and ready for action.

The goal of this document isn’t to erase every ounce of stage fright—that’s like trying to rewire human nature. In - stead, it’s about showing you how to work with that rush of adrenaline rather than against it. By understanding what’s happening in your mind and body, you can transform nerves into a secret advantage. Because if you can learn to harness those “hungry-lion” jitters, you’ll discover a level of focus, presence, and charisma that can elevate your performances to new heights. This is the truth.

Sound impossible? It’s not—it’s actually kind of fun! And the proof is in every performer you’ve ever admired. Even the most seasoned pros have dealt with trembling hands and racing pulses. The difference is that they’ve turned that reaction into fuel rather than fear. I like to say, "Don’t force it. Fierce it." And that’s precisely what you’re going to learn here—how to transform anxiety from a party-crasher into your personal hype squad.

Recognize & Name the Fear

Recognize and Name the Fear

The first step is admitting we have fear—and then inviting it in for a cup of tea. Instead of pushing it away or pretending it doesn’t exist, call it out.

Meet “Marcia”: A Lesson in Personifying Your Stage Fright

Let me introduce you to someone special: Marcia, my stage fright. She shows up whenever I’m about to perform—probably wearing last season’s shoes and a smile that could curdle milk. But here’s the twist: I’m not scared of her. In fact, I treat her like an annoying neighbor who keeps popping by uninvited.

Step 1: Name It

Give your fear a name—a real, human name. Betsy, Bobby, Mr. Rogers, Felicity, Marcia—whatever resonates. Seriously, take a moment to think of a name and stick with it. Suddenly, it’s easier to see it as “something else” that you can escort out the door.

Step 2: Laugh & Show It the Door

When Marcia arrives, I greet her with a sarcastic smile. “Marcia, sweetie, still miserable, I see? Listen up: to - night’s not your night. I’m sliving for this performance, and you’re not invited.” I’ll often bring a small token, like a pen, to represent her. Right before I step onstage, I physically leave that pen behind—symbolically tossing the negativity away. Buh-bye, Marcia!

Step 3: Own Your Space

Once you’ve named your fear, it’s easier to separate it from you, the superstar performer. Fear doesn’t belong on stage with you. Let it know who’s boss.

The Fierce Mindset

The Fierce Mindset

Now that you’ve called out your fear, it’s time to rewire your brain. (It’s easier than you think.) Shift your perspective and take control of yourfears by following the three steps below:

Step 1: Visualization

Close your eyes and picture yourself absolutely slaying your performance. The weight has been lifted, you feel completely overjoyed, you totally nailed everything you could possibly nail. Hear the whoops and hollers from the audience. Feel the electric energy of the applause. I like to imagine confetti falling from the ceiling and streamers shooting from the orchestra pit while bouquets of red roses land at my feet from my adoring fans. Let that triumphant vision settle deep in your bones.

Step 2: Affirmation

Find a good mantra that resonates with you. As you know, mine is: “Don’t force it. Fierce it.” Feel free to adopt it as yours, too. Here are some other options I like to tell the people I coach:

  • “Leave the mediocrity to someone else.”

  • “I am READY!”

  • "I’ve got this.”

  • “Bring it.”

  • “Time to show off.”

Whatever you decide upon, repeat your mantra whenever doubt creeps in, especially just before going on stage. The more you repeat your mantra to yourself, the more you’ll believe it. Repetition = reinforcement.

Step 3: Breathe Deeply, with Intention

Inhale slowly for four counts, exhale for eight counts. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. This convinces your body, “Hey, we’re safe, we’ve got this.” Instant calm.

Psychological Hacks & Quick Relaxation Techniques

Psychological Hacks and Quick Relxation Techniques

Use these 3 fierce life hacks to keep stage fright from taking the spotlight:

No. 1: Power Poses

Strike a pose—literally! Stand tall, hands on hips (the Wonder Woman stance), chin slightly raised. Studies suggest just two minutes of a power pose can increase feelings of confidence.

No. 2: Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Systematically tense then relax each muscle group, starting from your toes up to the tip of your head. You know where your usual tension spots are, so pay special attention to relaxing them during this step. When you let go of the tension, your body gets the hint: it’s time to chill.

No. 3: Controlled and Focused Vocal Warm-Ups

Channel that jittery energy into intentional, controlled warm-ups—lip trills, gentle humming, even a soft scale or siren using a straw. Vocalizing to yourself like this should feel like “home base” for you–something you have done a thousand times before. It’s comfortable and relaxing when you are able to focus on your breath as it supports your instrument. Transform that nervous adrenaline into a creative spark.

Turning Fear into Performance Fuel

Turning Fear into Performance Fuel

We’ve all heard the phrase “turn lemons into lemonade”— Well, here are two new ways you can turn panic into panache:

Swap 1 Word for Another

Instead of thinking, “I’m so nervous,” swap it for “I’m so excited!” Your body’s physical symptoms are almost identical to excitement anyway—so why not label it in a more positive way?

Create Your Own Pre-Show Ritual

A 3-second pep talk in the mirror or a quick set of three deep breaths can do wonders. Consistency is key here— use the same mini ritual before every performance to train your mind to switch into “showtime” mode.

My Own Pre-Show Ritual (One of Them Over the Years...)

My Own Pre-Show Ritual

Literally anything can become a pre-show ritual that can help send your nerves out the door. Let me share one of my own.

When I made my Off-Broadway debut in Naked Boys Singing (yes, really!), I started a ritual with a special brand of eye drops I happened to be digging at the time (Rhoto). They have a delightful burn that wakes you right up. Just before I left my dressing room during our preview performances, I’d drop one in each eye, bow my head, feel the tingle, then snap upright and lock eyes with myself in the mirror, whispering “STAR.”

It sounds silly—but it worked wonders. By opening night, the entire cast was doing it. That tiny repetition instilled a sense of calm and excitement in all of us. Stage fright? Not a chance. We slammed that door on Marcia, locked it, and threw away the key.

Post-Performance Reflection

Post-Performance Reflection

This one’s easy to forget, but it only takes a few seconds and is very effective. The moment you step off that stage, your adrenaline might still be high. Now’s the perfect time for a quick reflection:

Celebrate the Wins

Did you hit your high note with ease? Did you remember all your lines? Did you connect with the audience? Jot it down.

Learn from the Oops

If you tripped or missed a lyric, note it, but don’t dwell on it. Trust me, we all have our nightmare performances that we end up laughing about; mistakes are a part of what makes us human. Learn to look at these moments as you earning your stripes. And remember: tomorrow is a brand-new opportunity.

Build Confidence Over Time

Each successful reflection reduces the intensity of future stage fright. You’ll quickly realize that you can handle just about anything.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

Stage fright isn’t your enemy—it’s your built-in energy booster. By naming it, reframing it, and channeling it into your performance, you’ll walk on stage with a swagger that screams “I got this!” Remember: Leave mediocrity to someone else.

Ready to crush your next performance?

Stay Fierce, Stay Sliving, and Keep Singing.

Don’t force it. Fierce it.

And if Marcia shows up, well—show her out the door.

Thank You
