Seek Professional Guidance: (steps up on soap box)
Y'all, look, if you’ve never once been in a room—physically or virtually—with a real vocal coach who’s heard your voice, given you some valuable pointers on how to use your voice, and actually tailored a plan to suit your voice and your goals, I need you to do one thing: pause. Press the brakes on every vocal exercise you see on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram—wherever—until you do.
It doesn’t matter if you’re channeling your inner rocker, honing distortion techniques, prepping for gospel riffs, or just trying not to embarrass yourself in karaoke. It doesn’t matter if you’re 3 or 93, or how many viral videos you’ve watched from whichever fad voice teacher is trending today. None of that overrides the fact that if no professional has met your actual voice one-on-one, you’re playing with fire if you want to move forward with longevity in your voice. Because your voice is a living, breathing instrument—and, spoiler alert, you only get one.
And here’s the kicker: if you start off by blindly following random exercises that may or may not apply to you, you’ll risk creating a laundry list of bad habits. Bad habits that will take months—or even years—of lessons (and your money) to undo. (Granted, when singers come to me to undo their habits, it's a much faster process, but that's just because I "get it.") Translation: you’re wasting your time now and committing your future self to extra hassle. So, do yourself a favor: find someone who actually invests in you. Then, and only then, go wild with these exercises. I promise—it’ll make all the difference.
