The following is advanced vocal pedagogy, something Tour de Fierce has on lock. The next collection of categories comes from "classical singing"... but don't picture yourself wearing a viking hat quite yet (oops, too late! 😜).

Classical training is simply the high-performance science of how the voice works at its best and healthiest. At Tour de Fierce, we use that same athletic foundation to build unstoppable pop, rock, R&B, and musical theatre voices with the same freedom, stamina, and sparkle.

Beyond the Basics: The Tour de Fierce Voice Classification System

Your free online test gives you a quick vocal snapshot — but in private coaching sessions, we take your voice classification to the next level.

Tour de Fierce uses extended Fach-based criteria (the system used in opera and musical theatre worldwide) to pinpoint your true vocal identity.

In lessons, we evaluate your tessitura, timbre, and transition zones (passaggi) - not just your highest and lowest notes - to determine your precise type from this expanded range of professional categories:

Soprano Subtypes

  • Coloratura Soprano: agile, brilliant top; can reach F6 (“Queen of the Night”).

  • Lyric Soprano: warm and flexible; ideal for roles like Mimi (La Bohème).

  • Spinto / Dramatic Soprano: fuller tone and power (think Aida or Tosca).

Mezzo-Soprano Subtypes

  • Lyric Mezzo: expressive middle range with agility (Carmen).

  • Dramatic Mezzo: darker, commanding tone (Amneris in Aida).

  • Contralto: deepest female voice; rare, rich, and soulful (Erda, Ring Cycle).

Tenor Subtypes

  • Lyric Tenor: bright and youthful (Rodolfo, La Bohème).

  • Spinto Tenor: robust and heroic (Don José, Carmen).

  • Dramatic Tenor: powerful and dark, “hero-tenor” (Otello).

Baritone Subtypes

  • Lyric Baritone: smooth and elegant (Figaro).

  • Dramatic Baritone: fuller, more intense (Rigoletto).

  • Bass-Baritone: resonant and commanding (Wotan, Die Walküre).

Bass Subtypes

  • Basso Cantante: lyrical bass with flexibility (Don Giovanni).

  • Basso Profundo: lowest male voice, deep and sonorous (Sarastro).

During one-on-one sessions, Joseph will determine where you fall on this spectrum, then tailor warmups, repertoire, and resonance strategies to amplify your unique color, range, and artistry.

Vocal Range Test FAQs

Is the Tour de Fierce Vocal Range Test really free?

Yes: 100% free, no account required.

Does the Tour de Fierce Vocal Range Test work on iPhone?

Yes. If your mic is blocked inside an app or embed, tap Open in a new tab (iPhone fix) and run it in Safari.

What if my pitch wobbles?

We smooth the reading and use the median across frames. Hold a steady “ah” for ~2–3 seconds before tapping a marker.

How accurate is the voice type?

It’s a practical, singer-friendly classification using your lowest, highest, and comfortable notes. A 1:1 lesson refines it further.

Can I retake the test?

Yes—tap Reset and try again. It’s helpful to test when you’re fresh and hydrated.

Do I need a special mic?

No. Your phone or laptop mic is fine... just avoid noisy rooms and keep a consistent distance.

What should I do with my result?

Grab material that fits your comfy center, then book a session and we’ll build power, flexibility, and stamina around it.
