Les Contes D'Hoffmann (Lyrique en Mer)

In the summer of 2007, Joseph Stanek joined the opera company of Lyrique en Mer on the idyllic island of Belle-Île-en-Mer, France. What a way to kickstart a professional career! As part of the company’s acclaimed production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Joseph performed the role of Luther, the gruff tavern keeper whose presence bookends the fantastical storytelling of the opera. He also sang in the chorus, adding depth and richness to the lush ensemble sound.

The production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann was a resounding success, drawing opera lovers from across Europe to the shores of Belle-Île for a summer of unforgettable music. Under the starlit skies of the island, Joseph honed his craft as a performer, embracing the challenge of singing in French (for a French audience, on top of that!) and immersing himself in the rich storytelling of Offenbach’s haunting and cinematic orchestrations.

Beyond the mainstage, Joseph gave concerts throughout all four regions of Belle-Île-en-Mer, connecting with local audiences in intimate, historic venues and sharing his passion for sacred music in both grand and personal settings. This experience not only expanded Joseph’s artistic horizons but also deepened his love for Les Contes d’Hoffmann, which remains one of his favorite operas to this day.
